The Ejura Nifahene, Nana Osei Kwadwo Ansebie, has tendered empty bullet shells as evidence of shootings during the disturbances to the Committee looking into the recent riots at Ejura.
Giving testimony as a witness on Day seven of the Committee’s public hearing in Kumasi Nana Kwadwo Ansebie a representative of the Traditional Council on the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal Security Council gave a chronology of events leading to deadly violence.
He said the youth together with the traditional leadership of Ejura lodged a complaint about an alleged lack of action on the part of the Municipal Police Command on physical assault on the late Ibrahim Mohammed popularly called Kaaka.
The Ejura Nifahene noted that on 26th June when the chiefs and elders had impressed upon the agitated youth to be calm, the youth later attacked and vandalized part of the Ejura Police Station and some vehicles that were parked at the premises as well as the Municipal Revenue Check Point.
Answering questions from the Committee members, Nana Osei Kwadwo Ansebie noted that even though the police deployment to the cemetery during the burial of Kaaka may have provoked the youth, that may not be the only motivation for the violent protest adding that the intervention of the military was timely.
On behalf of the Ejura Traditional Council, Nana Osei Kwadwo Ansebie emphasized the need for the establishment of a permanent military base and upgrading of the existing Municipal Police Command into a Police Division to proactively deal with any future threat to peace and security in the area.
