The former President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaore has been sentenced to life in prison, for complicity in the murder of his predecessor Thomas Sankara, more than 30 years ago reports the BBC.

Mr. Compaore who ruled the country for almost three decades, was sentenced in absentia by a military tribunal, with his former head of Security, Hyacinthe Kafando. Both men have previously denied any involvement in Sankara’s death. Thomas Sankara was gunned down in the capital, Ouagadougou in 1987, at age 37, four years after taking power in a previous coup.
