Volta Region: Stakeholders plant trees at UHAS to mark Green Ghana Day

At the commemoration of the 2024 Regional edition of Green Ghana Day in Ho, stakeholders stressed to need for the citizens to plant more trees to conserve the vegetation cover of the Volta Region.

The Region has begun its target of planting one hundred thousand trees this year as part of the Green Ghana project. The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa who led the exercise said the goal is to boost the Region’s vast forestry for sustainable ecosystem for future generations.

The Volta Region has planted about 700 thousand trees since the inception of Green Ghana day in 2021. Out of the figure, the Regional office of the Forestry Commission estimates that over 500 thousand different tree species have survived.

The Forestry Commission in partnership with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council and other partners is poised to achieve its targets to plant one hundred thousand trees this year across the region.

This Volta Regional edition of the 2024 Green Ghana Day celebration was held on the campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences where different species of trees were planted.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa emphasised the need for citizens in the region to join the campaign to ensure that the region protect its status as one of the top regions in the country with a vast vegetation cover on beautiful landscapes.

He disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration with the Forestry Commission will focus on the maintenance of the newly planted trees to ensure that they are well-natured.

Management of UHAS has planted over four thousand trees on its campus with support from the Forestry Commission as part of its strategic goal to create a conducive learning environment for staff and students.

The University’s Director of Works and Physical Development, Ruth Xorla Ayertey disclosed that the management intends to soon establish green reserves which will also facilitate medicinal plants for its Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine to conduct research and to produce herbal medicines.

The Volta Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Bright Manso-Howard urged citizens to make good use of the Commission free of charge trees to support its afforestation drive.

He also called on Ghanaians to embrace the tree planting project and inculcate the practice in their wards to create a greener environment against climate change.

The Ho Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dela Quampah entreated government to establish a scheme to claim fallow lands in especially rural areas for woodlots.
