The Women’s Wing of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union, TEWU, of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has hit the principal streets of Tamale to underscore the vital role women can play to ensure peaceful elections.

Amidst drumming and dancing, the women campaigned for peace with placards some of which read, “Empowered women, peaceful communities”, “Working women, builders of peace”, “We stand for peace”, “Yes for peace”, “no to violence”, and “Peace over violence”, among others.

National Chairperson of TEWU-Women’s Committee, Rebecca Ama Yankson, emphasised the crucial role women play in maintaining peace, especially within their homes.

She believes that peace starts from the home and is encouraging working women to advise their families, particularly their sons and spouses, not to engage in acts that could disrupt peace during the elections.

Northern Regional Industrial Relations Officer of TEWU, Christina Abasige, said the North is at stake when peace is disrupted. She said the two flagbearers are all sons of the North; therefore, whoever emerges as the winner is a plus to the North.

National Women Chairperson, Health Workers Union, Hajia Rahinatu Abdul-Salam, advised Ghanaians to respect people’s political affiliations and choices. She called on all to exercise their civic responsibility with decorum, emphasising that the health sector will need an utmost peaceful environment to provide quality healthcare to people.

The Peace walk was facilitated by the National TEWU Women’s Committee and the Northern Regional Council  with all sister unions. It was on the theme, “Peaceful Election 2024: The Role of Working Women for a Peaceful Community”.
