Deputy Minister of Information, Pius Enam Hadzide, says government will soon restructure State-Owned media organisations such as the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Ghana News Agency (GNA) and the New Times Corporation.
He said despite challenges inherited in the running of these state media houses, government remains committed to reinvesting in them to ensure effective dissemination of information.
Mr. Hadzide was speaking at the third in the series of public lectures organised by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), as part of its 70th anniversary. The lecture focused on the GNA.
The Ghana News Agency, the foremost wire Service media organisation in Ghana, was established by the country’s First President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Over the years, the once vibrant News Agency has become a pale shadow of itself, a situation GJA President, Roland Affail Monney was unhappy about.
Mr. Monney highlighted some of the challenges bedevilling the News Agency.
Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide, noted that in a world where there are competing interests in news gathering, there is the need to adequately resource state media, which he said, is immune to people’s political and parochial interests.

General Manager of the GNA, Kofi Owusu, who was concerned about staff attrition rate, indicated that the situation goes beyond management.

Delivering the lecture, a Former General Manager of the agency and Veteran journalist, Nana Appau Duah, underscored the crucial role of the GNA. He noted that stakeholders need to fashion out growth policies that would ensure that  the GNA, is able to stand the test of time.

A blood donation will be held at the forecourt of the International Press Center, on Thursday, October 17 as part of activities marking the anniversary.
