The Parliament of Ghana on Monday 14th March 2022 hosted the Students’ mock Parliament in commemoration of this year’s Commonwealth Day in Accra.
The celebration under the theme: “Delivering common future-connecting, innovating and transforming”, brought together more than 100 students representing Students’ Parliament from various Universities. Some of the Universities represented were; University of Ghana Legon, University of Cape Coast, University of Professional Studies Accra, Accra Technical University, Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science and Technology.
In his welcome address, Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah urged students to try as much as possible to avoid partisan politics in Parliament and remain neutral to propel progress.
The First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu also asked the students not to be participants only, but contributors and act as responsible citizens. He also urged them to be courageous when debating on the floor.
”You must desist from using foul language and be decorous at all times”, he posited.
Commonwealth Day:
Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration enjoyed by people of the Commonwealth. These people can be found in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific, and Europe. The theme for Commonwealth Day 2022 is; Delivering a Common Future.
It is highlighting how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are ‘‘innovating, connecting and transforming”, to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance, and boosting trade.
2022 is also the Queen’s Jubilee Year, so the Commonwealth celebrations will include a special focus on the role the Queen plays in the lives of people and Communities across the Commonwealth.
