Fire yesterday, May 11, burnt down a four-bedroom residence belonging to a retired educationist Mrs. Comfort Teiko Addo Alimoh in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.
Desperate calls to the District Fire Office which is located some 200 meters away from the fire disaster scene proved futile due to what station officers described as faulty vehicle engine and equipment.
The inferno which allegedly started from a nearby cold store also affected other shops, destroying property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
According to an eye witness account, the fire started about 4pm and took the intervention of the community youth to bring it under control.
A victim of the disaster, former Assemblyman Douglas Alimoh said “the fire started from a nearby cold store which is on the same plot with the apartment. The damaged apartment belongs to my mother; she is currently not around. We have the District Fire Service office very close so we rushed to the fire service to call them, when we got there they told us that their tender is broken down so they couldn’t help.”
