Persons who send unsolicited messages to customers of the telcos will be blacklisted.
This is according to the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications which comprise leading telecom operators in Ghana, AirtelTigo, MTN and Vodafone.
The caution follows complaints across various media, relating to campaign messages sent by the NPP to consumers which they described as unsolicited.
Many of those who complained on social media, blamed the telcos for giving their information out to the party since they had not subscribed to any such service.
In the statement by the Telecoms Chamber, it said the mobile network operators, do not give out contacts of their subscribers to Content Providers or marketers for targeting, adding that they are politically neutral, and their policies and principles prohibit the promotion of any political party.
It said the National Communication Authority’s guidelines on unsolicited electronic communications, provide a detailed framework for transaction and non-transactional messages and the telcos will continue to work with the Regulator to support plans in implementing filtering systems and blacklist mechanisms to protect the consumer.
It said customers who wish to unsubscribe from Unsolicited Electronic Communications, UECs of any kind, should type STOP (space) SENDERS’NAME and send to the number from which the message or call was sent to stop receiving such messages.
