The Medical Superintendent of the Enchi Government Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Koomson, has denied reports that the Sewum Health Center in the Aowin District of the Western region has recorded high numbers of newborn babies without some body parts, as a result of illegal mining activities in the area.

This follows reports that pregnant women are losing their babies because they drink water contaminated with chemicals used by the illegal miners.

Dr Koomson told GBC’s Nathaniel Nartey that although such an occurrence is scientifically impossible, the Regional Health Directorate will investigate and make its report public within 24 hours.
