As we celebrate International Youth Day, it’s celebrated annually on August 12, which aims to bring youth issues to the forefront of the international community and recognize the potential of young people as partners in today’s global society.
The day provides an opportunity to amplify young people’s voices, actions, and initiatives, as well as promote their meaningful, universal, and equitable engagement.
To mark the occasion, some young people shared their thoughts on the celebration and the challenges they face in Ghana. Justice Alor, Speaker of the University of Ghana House, stated that International Youth Day should reflect on the contribution process of young people to their country and assess the inputs and contributions of leaders towards their development. He acknowledged that while opportunities exist for youth engagement in politics and policy-making, more needs to be done.
Agbolosu Mawuse Abla, a public speaker, expressed surprise that she was unaware of International Youth Day until recently and emphasized the need for greater attention and recognition to make the day more memorable. She noted that youth have been largely neglected in Ghana, with limited involvement at the national level, including minimal engagement with student union parliaments.
Asempapa Setsofe Micheline, General Secretary Elect of the Legon Archaeology Students Association, pointed out that there is insufficient publicity about International Youth Day, which should be more widely recognized and celebrated by young people. She highlighted unemployment as a significant challenge, particularly for women who lack practical experience, making it difficult for them to enter the job market.
Kwesi Sarfo, a Youth Activist, emphasized the need for increased activation and engagement with International Youth Day. He identified key challenges facing young people, including lack of employment, social inclusion, leadership opportunities, and equal access to opportunities, particularly for those in marginalized communities.
