An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service has died in a fatal accident on Sunday while chasing smugglers at Kuyoli, a suburb of Tatale on the Ghana-Togo border. A second officer was badly injured and is on admission at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
According to a release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Immigration Service in the Northern Regional, the officer were deployed for patroll duties on the Ghana-Togo border to ward off smugglers.
The statement said while patrolling the Kuyoli area, the officers allegedly spotted smugglers on a motorbike. While pursuing them, the vehicle crashed, leaving one dead and another in critical condition.
Despite the closure of borders in response to the Covid-19 outbreak, some residents of border communities continue to smuggle people and goods across the border.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue.
