Disability issues are often very sensitive and sometimes ignorance makes it worse. There are a lot of people living with disabilities who have risen above the odds and their stories not only inspire but educate them to be mindful of how to treat individuals with respect and dignity irrespective of their impairment.

On GBC’s Uniiq FMs latest addition to existing programmes, christened OVER THE BAR today, an advocate for sights savers in Ghana and a member of Ghana Federation of disability organisation board, Gertrude Oforiwaa Fefoame shared her thoughts on how society can contribute to better the lives of those who are challenged. We bring you more in this report by Cynthia Boateng.

She is eloquent, well-educated and has achieved the feat that some who have the full complement of their vision can only dream about. She speaks about disability with passion and says the problem is ”deeply rooted in the attitude of society”.

Madam Fefoame also believes some parents are unconsciously overprotecting their children who have impairments and ”that is not helpful”.

For more insightful education on issues on causes of disability and for inspirational stories, GBC’s OVER THE BAR is a programme that should not be missed. Tune in on Wednesday mornings at 8am on 95.7fm.
