The Chief Executive Officer of Adwinsa Publication Ghana Limited (APGL), Kwaku Opong-Amponsah, has underscored the importance of reading among both adults and children.
He says parents must be deliberate in pushing their children to read, as it empowers them to make their voices heard in public matters while encouraging parents, authority figures, and celebrities to adapt to reading to motivate the young.
Adwinsa is one of the leading reputable Indigenous bookpublishing houses in Africa, established in March 1977 in Accra. It produces textbooks, storybooks, and other reading materials basically for children.
Over the years, Adwinsa has published books that touched on social issues such as menstruation, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and physical challenges among children.
This year’s book publication titled “Adamu the Child Miners,” focuses on educating children on the evil effects of illegal mining, locally called galamsey.
It is a story about a child called Adamu who, through his efforts in illegal mining, was identified by his community as mayhem and has been completely scrapped in the community.
The publication is under the theme “Poison Our Water, Poison Our Future”.
Mr. Opong-Amponsah said the fight against galamsey will not see progress if abandoned in the hands of politicians. He, however, encouraged all to get involved in the fight, especially children.
Executive Director, Complementary Education Agency, Catherine Agyapamaa Appiah-Pinkra, has encouraged child education, stressing that, it would help identify dangers caused by illegal miners to water bodies.
Deputy Chief Administrator, Guidance and Counselling Unit Ghana Education Service, Mrs. Sarah Kumi Yeboah-Boadu, said water bodies can be protected by putting certain measures in place, highlighting some measures including, -Plant trees
-Spread the word
-Do not filter
-Recycle and reuse
Adwinsa is calling on all to help fight the canker.
