The United States (U.S.) has warmly congratulated John Dramani Mahama on his victory in Ghana’s 2024 presidential election. His new term as President is set to begin on January 7, 2025.

In a statement released on December 10, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Ghana for its peaceful and credible elections. He commended the Electoral Commission for conducting a free and transparent voting process, highlighting Ghana as a model of democracy and stability in Africa.

The Electoral Commission announced the results on December 9, declaring Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of the total). He defeated his closest rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The U.S. also celebrated Ghana’s historic milestone, congratulating Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on becoming the country’s first female vice president.

While recognizing isolated reports of violence that led to at least four deaths, the U.S. offered condolences to the victims’ families and called for investigations to ensure accountability.

The statement emphasized the United States’ commitment to its partnership with Ghana, supporting democracy, peace, and development. Secretary Blinken also praised Vice President Bawumia for graciously accepting the results.

The U.S. looks forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to strengthen its historic relationship with Ghana.
