World Water Day: Research Institute makes case for access to groundwater to address drought

The Water Research Institute says northern Ghana can totally eradicate drought if groundwater resources in that part of the country is properly accessed. The challenge however is the right technologies needed in drilling for groundwater. Activities of unqualified groundwater drillers also affect the quality of the resource underground. These came up at a workshop on exploring groundwater resources in Accra.

Ahead of World Water Day which is observed on March 22 each year, the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR is looking at how Ghana can utilize its water for multiple uses in tandem with the global theme which is “groundwater, making the invisible visible”.

The Executive Secretary of the Water Research Institute, Professor Yaw Osei Tweneboana said issues of water shortages can be totally addressed if groundwater is given a priority. Professor Tweneboana stressed the urgency for water drillers to get adequate technical knowledge and support, so that ”while drilling water underground, the earth surface and other natural areas are not damaged”.
