Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has described the Assin-North by-election as needless, saying it would not have been necessary if the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the NDC Candidate.
Speaking on GBC`s Current Affairs Programme “FOCUS”, Mr. Suhuyini said, “Mr. Gyakye Quayson must be appreciated for sacrificing his Canadian citizenship to return to Ghana”. Nonetheless, he noted that the NPP has from day one eyed the Assin North seat due to the even number of Members in Parliament, hence the political machinations to snatch the seat at all costs.
The Tamale North legislator said the elections on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, represent a ‘’test of the people’s power’ versus the ‘test of the power of those in power.’’
He, therefore, urged the constituents of Assin North to come out and ”vote massively for James Gyakye Quayson”.
Meanwhile, a member of the National Communications Team of the NPP, Alfred Thompson said one cannot have dual citizenship and still contest in an election in Ghana. He stated categorically that he lived in Europe for more than eight years, but he ( Alfred Thompson) did not naturalize, though he was asked to.
Governance Analyst and Dean of Business Administration and Community Arts at Academic City University College, Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi expressed his dissatisfaction with the government for not taking the problems of Assin North seriously.
