Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged his full support to President-elect John Dramani Mahama following his victory in the 2024 general election.

The assurance came after Bawumia conceded defeat and congratulated Mahama, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on his electoral success.

In a televised address to the nation on Sunday, December 8, Dr. Bawumia stated that his decision to concede was driven by a desire to foster unity and maintain peace in the country, even as Ghanaians await the official declaration of the election results by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“After careful consideration and with a focus on the greater good of our nation, I have decided to concede the results of the election and offer my full support to President-elect Mahama,” Bawumia said. “This is a time for unity, and I believe it is essential that we come together to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for all Ghanaians.”

Provisional results from across the country indicate that Mahama has secured a commanding lead, with early figures suggesting he has won decisively in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. Although the official results are still pending, the trends point to a clear victory for the NDC leader.

Bawumia, in his address, stressed that the peaceful transfer of power was paramount and that all political leaders should support Mahama’s leadership in the upcoming administration. “This election was about Ghana, and we must now put aside political differences to work together for the nation’s progress,” he stated.

The gesture has been widely praised as an example of political maturity, with many Ghanaians welcoming Bawumia’s commitment to a peaceful transition. Analysts note that this move reflects the strength of Ghana’s democracy, demonstrating that leadership transcends party lines and is focused on the collective welfare of the nation.

President-elect Mahama, who is yet to make a formal statement regarding Bawumia’s concession, is expected to call for national unity as the country prepares for the transition of power. His camp has expressed gratitude for Bawumia’s support and is hopeful that this spirit of cooperation will pave the way for effective governance in the coming years.

As Ghana moves toward the final declaration of election results, the emphasis on peace and unity remains central, with both leaders signaling their commitment to ensuring the country’s continued growth and stability.
