The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced Tuesday, December 19, 2023 for the district-level election.

The election is to select Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members to effect development within the electoral areas of our political system. It will take place across all electoral areas in the country.

Reports have indicated low patronage and interest in successive district-level elections even though it forms the basis of our democratic practice. In a bid to ascertain the awareness level of citizens and residents in some electoral areas, gbcghanaonline.com visited the Mallam community to inquire about their knowledge on the election.

In an interview with Abigail, a resident of the community, she mentioned that she doesn’t know anything about the district-level election because of the low level of awareness created.

“I have not heard or seen any information van going around the community to educate us on the district-level elections, and I don’t even know the exact day for the voting but I know my polling station,” She stated.

Another resident, Mr. Tetteh, also highlighted that he can only go and vote if Tuesday happens to be a holiday.

“If Tuesday happens to be a holiday, I will go and cast my vote because, we need massive change and improvement in our community,” He highlighted.

Nana Ama, also a resident, lamented that she has not seen any developmental projects in the community.

“I voted in the last district-level elections, but I might not vote this time around. This is because I haven’t seen any developmental projects in the community ever since we voted for them. We have bad road network in the community, and when it is an election, they promise to do something better for us, but they do not do it,” She said

Varied responses with a majority expressing their low knowledge on the election met our audience. Most of them demographically youthful expressed zero knowledge on the forthcoming elections.

However, they pleaded with the government to create more awareness, especially in the community as well as on radio and TV to help educate people to participate in it.
