In a briefing earlier on Sunday, December 8, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Samuel Tettey, overseeing operations, expressed concerns about the delays in the collation process due to the gathering of party supporters at the collation centres.
Reports from various collation centres indicated disruptions caused by the delayed announcement of election results.
Tragically, in response to the delayed declaration of election results, angry youth set fire to the Damongo Municipal EC office, resulting in one fatality and one injury. In a separate incident, supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) forcefully entered the inner perimeters of the Weija-Gbawe collation centre and stormed the Dome-Kwabenya collation due to frustrations over the delayed release of final voting results.
Mr. Tettey urged political party leaders to intervene and encourage their supporters to vacate the collation centres, allowing for the smooth progress of the results collation. He assured the public that once the presidential election results from all 16 regions are received, they will be examined by party agents and officially certified by the EC chairperson, who serves as the returning officer for presidential elections.
