The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly rejected a directive from the Electoral Commission (EC) calling for a rerun of elections at a polling station in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.
The EC’s decision came after it was discovered that results from the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station were missing a valid pink sheet, which serves as the official summary of results.
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, explained that while results from 367 polling stations had been collated, one result was rejected due to procedural errors. He noted that the rejected result was recorded on an incorrect statement of the poll.
In response, the NDC strongly opposed the call for a rerun. Rashid Tanko Computer, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, argued that their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, had already won based on the majority of results.
He explained that the difference in votes between the NDC candidate and the closest opponent was 1,154, while the voter population at the disputed polling station was only 689.
“For us, the issue is clear. Even if you remove the 689 votes, Elikplim Akurugu still maintains a lead. The EC must respect the results and declare our candidate the winner,” he said.
The NDC has also accused the EC of making errors in their calculations and has vowed not to accept the proposed rerun.
The situation remains tense as both sides hold firm to their positions, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting the next steps from the Electoral Commission.
