South Africa is prepared for today’s general election. Almost a million votes have already been cast in special voting permits for those who are unable to vote today.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), more than 27 million voters are registered to cast their ballot. The election will take place in all nine provinces which will decide the makeup of both the national and provincial legislatures.
This election will be a test of the ruling African National Congress party, which has been in power since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago.
It will decide the makeup of both the national and provincial legislatures.
Results are expected within days. South Africans vote for parties and not directly for their President in national elections. Parties then get seats in Parliament according to their share of the vote and the lawmakers elect the President.
