The Black Stars will receive a consolation prize of $700,000 for finishing third in Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Although the Black Stars did not make any significant progress in the tournament, they are entitled to receive that amount from CAF’s $34.6 million prize money.
According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), six teams finishing third will receive $700,000, while the other six teams who also finished as fourth-place teams in their respective groups will be awarded an amount of $500,000 each.
The eight teams that existed in the last 16 of the tournament will also accumulate a consolation prize of $800,000 each, while the four losing quarterfinalist teams will take home $1,300,000. The two losing semifinalists will also be granted a whopping $2.5 million.
The grand finale holds the fat account, where the losing finalist will be awarded a staggering $4 million. The overall winner of the tournament will proudly take home a mouthwatering prize of $7 million, accompanied by the prestigious AFCON trophy.
It’s rather unfortunate that the Black Stars can’t be placed in the conversation of winning the AFCON trophy, as they were shamefully kicked out of the tournament without winning a single game in Ground B.
