The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde defeated the mambas of Mozambique by 2:0 at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan on Friday, January 19, 2024.
Cape Verde put up a show as they stood tall in their second group game against Mozambique. The Blue Sharks started the game as the better side from start to finish, creating numerous chances.
Cape Verde took advantage of Mozambique’s weak defensive play as they poured constant pressure on the defence of the Mambas, forcing goalkeeper Ernan to make numerous saves. The defensive line was eventually broken when Bebe scored from a wonderful free kick in the 32nd minute, which saw Ernan struggle to prevent it from entering his net.
The first half ended on a one-sided note, as Cape Verde dominated from start to finish. Mozambique along the line had their moments, as they were awarded a penalty in the 39th minute, but it was eventually ruled out by VAR.
The second half continued on the same note as the first half as the Blue Sharks held their dominance over the Mambas of Mozambique. Cape Verde added a goal to their first-half goal, making it 2:0 when captain Ryan Mendes scored in the 51st minute.
Cape Verde, after scoring their second goal, still held on to their possession ball as they added a third in the 69th minute when Lenini scored with a long-range shot, beating goalkeeper Ernan.
Cape Verde, after bagging their second win in the AFCON 2023, becomes the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.
