Veteran journalist, Madam Tina Aforo-Yeboah, has hinted that attacks on journalists and, by extension, press freedom did not start under the Fourth Republic.
According to her, there have been intermittent attacks on journalists since the first republican administration until the current dispensation.
The veteran journalist said this yesterday during a special roundtable panel discussion on the topic “Journalism: The Whole Story” on GTV, hosted by Mr. Kafui Dey.
“Well, I must say that from the first republic to the fourth republic, there have been intermittent attacks on press freedom from all sides.
Sometimes people think that state media outlets are being favoured over private media houses and vice versa. But the fact remains that journalists have always been under attack,” she reiterated.
When asked by the host, Mr. Kafui Dey, whether she felt under attack at one point or another, Madam Aforo-Yebaoh replied in the affirmative, saying, “I was walked out of a press conference by a former First Lady of this country, and it was so humiliating. That was because my surname was the same as somebody else’s.
And for that reason, she didn’t want me to be at the press conference, and since that day, I was never assigned to cover her again. But mine was just the tip of the iceberg, as some journalists, including an editor, were attacked physically at various events,” she added.
